Life on Mars could be within reach of the Curiosity rover

One study concludes that, if it exists, it is more likely to be a few centimeters deep, below the surface of a young crater

About ten centimeters underground. That is the depth from which one could find - if there is one - life on Mars; within reach of the instruments carried by the Curiosity rover (Mars Science Laboratory), which will reach the red planet at the beginning of August. It is proposed by a study carried out by the American Geophysical Union (AGU), which has studied how cosmic radiation penetrates the ground, and how it would affect organic molecules under it.

According to the study, the Ideal place to look for organic molecules on Mars is just below the land of the youngest craters. "Up to about 10 million years," the researchers say. Although the Curiosity rover will land in a very old crater - almost 3,500 million years old - it may have more modern impact holes in it that do meet the conditions, he says. Javier Martín , from the Astrobiology Center of INTA. "Even so, the purpose of Curiosity is not to find life on Mars."
