A CAB research group at the prestigious NASA Awards on 19-11-2014

Today the prestigious NASA Awards have been given to research groups that have excelled in the effort to advance science, outreach and education.
< p> The NASA Awards are the most prestigious honor awards given by NASA . Each year, a large number of candidates for these awards, both individual and research groups, for their contribution to the missions of the Agency. After a rigorous selection, only a select number of researchers are finally nominated with medals or certificates that are delivered at an annual ceremony at the headquarters of NASA centers.

This time, during the ceremony held at Syvertson Main
Auditorium of the Ames Research Center at 2:00 pm (local) today, the Group Achievement Award (award to the group with the best achievement) was awarded to the research team at Planetary Lake Lander (PLL), led by the researcher at SETI Nathalie Cabrol , in which a group of researchers from the Center for Astrobiology (CAB, CSIC-INTA) is a member of the Víctor Parro . The PLL team has been nominated for their work in the development of instrumentation that can be used in the future exploration of Saturn's moon Titan.

Víctor Parro's team at the CAB has participated in the three campaigns carried out within the PLL project to the Laguna Negra in the Chilean Andes (Metropolitan Region). In these campaigns, several members of the CAB, the doctors Yolanda Blanco and Luis Rivas, from the group of Victor Parro, and the doctor Ángeles Aguilera have participated in the campaigns in person and with the realization of experimentation at the laboratory. The contribution of the CAB group has focused on the detection of microbial biomarkers in both water and lake sediments through in situ analysis. For the fieldwork, LDChip, a life signs detector developed entirely in the CAB, and photosynthetic activity monitoring systems were used, while several molecular and geochemical techniques were used for the work in the laboratory. The objective of this study is to establish a correlation between the different physical-chemical factors altered by the decrease of the glacier (Echáurren Glacier) that nourishes the lake and the microbiological and metabolic profiles of the lake.
