Goodbye to the little green men

Is there anyone out there? It is hard to think that the Earth is a mere accident, the result of a unique chance. Now it seems that the answer to this recurring question could be closer than ever in the history of humanity, because at no time before had been available so powerful technological resources to observe and explore space. Science has reformulated its approach and today seeks molecules and microorganisms, not Martians or aliens.

"There are two possibilities: that we are alone in the universe or that we are not. two are equally frightening, "solved the science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke, author of the well-known novel and then film, directed by Stanley Kubrick, 2001: a space odyssey.

From the time of the Greek philosophers, or perhaps earlier, each time that at nightfall a cloak of beautiful flickering points enveloped the Earth, human beings have asked ourselves if our planet is the only world of all possible worlds, and perhaps now, after decades Spying on our galaxy neighbors, we are close for the first time in the history of mankind to find out the answer to that question.

"Space exploration and observations made from Earth have taught that in regions where the stars are born there is a great wealth of organic molecules and astrochemistry, of which many details are known. And now is the time to apply all those knowledge and those that astronomy provides to look for traces of life in other places ", considers Benjamín Montesinos, one of the researchers of the Center for Astrobiology (CAB, CSIC-INTA).
