The Department of Astrophysics of the CAB rejects the cuts to the Calar Alto Observatory

With this statement, it adds to the position expressed by the Spanish Society of Astronomy and the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia.

Researchers of the Department of Astrophysics of the Astrobiology Center (mixed center of the National Institute of Astrophysics) Aerospace Technique -INTA- and of the Superior Council of Scientific Research - CSIC), we fully subscribe to the statement from the Spanish Astronomical Society (SEA) on the situation of the Calar Alto Observatory , published last June 5th.

The observatory of Calar Alto he has some very relevant functions in our work as researchers, technologists and disseminators. There are numerous scientific programs and doctoral theses that will be affected, and even paralyzed, by the closure of facilities. We will stop having access to leading instruments, some of which had recently entered service. At this time we also contribute to the development of the instrument CARMENES , whose future may be in danger due to the reduction of personnel in the Observatory, with the loss of knowledge that implies. On the other hand, the Center of
Astrobiology operates and maintains the Calar Alto data file , and any Reduction of personnel related to operations will be in detriment of the interoperability and effectiveness of this service. Finally, we want to be in solidarity with the Observatory's employees, specialized personnel who for years have helped us in the execution of our programs and who carry out their work in really hard and demanding conditions.

We regret that this agreement has been signed without having previously discussed a roadmap that defines the future priorities of the different astronomical observatories participated by our country. The fait accompli policy, without a process of reflection in which the national astronomical community (as well as the German one) could have participated, leads to the loss of investments in instrumentation made in recent years and to the frustration of the research community. < / span>

From the Department of Astrophysics of the Astrobiology Center we want to express our total disagreement both with the content of this new addendum to the agreement and with the how it has been managed.
